Statement:

I am a local Arlingtonian, who has found inspiration and love in oil paints.  I minored in Visual Arts in college, but my focus then was photography.  After college I moved back home and worked for a few years while I built a van into a camper.  The plan was to traverse the Pan-American Highway, Alaska to Argentina, in two years, stopping in both Central and South America for several months to work with local non-profits.  After a wonderful but somewhat traumatic long-term travel experience, I came back to Arlington to start over again, and as part of my “re-find me” plan, I signed up for an oil painting class through Arlington’s Adult Education program.  I’ve been signing up every semester for 10 years now for Jane McElvany Coonce’s painting class and I have grown immensely from her tutelage and observation of other students in the class.

Today, I focus on light and vibrancy, attempting to draw my viewers in with color and composition, often making you feel that you are a part of the painting.  My style would most likely be called photorealism, but with a flare of effervescence that captivates a moment in time more than a photograph ever could.  In fact, my work has unique undertones of hyper-realism, bringing the viewer’s eye directly where I want you to focus, sometimes even making you question whether it’s a painting or a photo.

I have done many commissions, portraits of people and pets, but my favorite compositions are landscapes, but with unique & interesting compositions (at night, close perspective, etc.).  Since joining the Arlington Artists Alliance in 2013, I have shown my artwork at many local venues including the Arlington Free Clinic, Luna Grill in Shirlington, Cosi in Courthouse, the Arlington Co. Treasurer’s Office and Judicial Chambers, Cassatt’s, SAIC/Leidos, Toby’s Ice Cream, Hand-N-Hand Therapy, The Aurora Hills Library, Sterling Picture Framing, the Holiday Inn in Ballston (which I help co-curate), Gallery Underground, and now Gallery Clarendon as well. I was the Co-Director of Gallery Underground for 3.5 years, from March 2014-November 2017, and my artwork can be found in private collections around the U.S. and internationally.
